About
Port Hadlock
Port
Hadlock is the commercial hub of East Jefferson County, south
of Port Townsend. It is part of the "Tri-Area", which also includes the
unincorporated towns of Chimacum and Irondale. The town is located at
the entrance to Indian Island, Port Hadlock, on the south end of Port
Townsend Bay, is part of a community known as the Tri-Cities.
Port
Hadlock was established by Samuel Hadlock in 1886 and the area had at
that time a sawmill and timber business. The timber was carried to other
west coast cities on tall sailing ships.
Long before
white men settled the area, the Chimacum (Chemakuan or Tsemakum) people
had a village at the head of the bay. It is said to have been a gathering
place for nearly all of the tribes in the Puget Sound. From there, the
whole of Port Townsend Bay is visible - a benefit that provided them ample
protection from a sea attack.
A southwesternly-extending
spit and the presence of Skunk Island help assure calm waters for the
Port Hadlock Marina.
Port Hadlock
is the gateway to Marrowstone, home to Fort Flagler State Park which is
popular with visitors and locals for camping, boating, beach combing,
and seafood gathering. Marrowstone Island is located just beyond Indian
Island and across the bay from Port Townsend. The Navy operates a major
supply depot on Indian Island, and many deer can be seen within the reservation
while driving over to Marrowstone Island.
There are
a number of county parks and three state parks in the Port Hadlock area
for overnight camping, shellfish harvesting in season, picnicking, hiking,
beach combing, fishing, and clamming.
