Port
Townsend is a quiet Victorian seaport at the tip of the Olympic Peninsula
in Washington, so peaceful it seems worlds away from the hustle and
bustle of big city life, yet it's only a short drive and a delightful
ferry ride to Seattle.
Many
famous Victorian homes have been converted into bed and breakfast
inns, such as the Starret House as shown in the picture, making Port
Townsend the bed and breakfast capital of the Pacific Northwest.
Port
Townsend was a busy seaport during the 1800s and most of that eras'
original architecture has remained. Port Townsend is one of only three
Victorian seaports in the U.S. on the National Historic Register.
Fort
Worden
State Park, with its camping, dormitories, Officer's Row accommodations,
serves as a cultural and convention center, and home of Centrum, a
non-profit center for the arts and creative education. The movie,
An Officer and a Gentleman, was filmed in Port Townsend using
Fort Worden and many
downtown businesses as settings.
Port
Townsend is surrounded by water - the
Straits of Juan de Fuca, Admiralty inlet, and Discovery Bay. So it's
little wonder that we have so many water sports
- fishing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, scuba diving, and of course,
beach combing.
